5th Annual Awards Night

You are invited to attend the Park Extension Historical Society’s 2015 social highlight, the Awards Night dinner/soirée conference featuring a talk related to local heritage and history. It will be accompanied by Dessert, including moustokouloura, a Greek favourite, and coffee/tea/juice.
The subject is the small church at 7700 de l’Épée, Koimisis Tis Theotokou (Assumption of the Virgin) which burned last Easter Monday causing great sadness to the whole Greek community and a sense of loss to residents, and tourists as well since its doors were always open. Since 1968, when the building was acquired from the Nazarene church, a splendid collection of devotional art and decoration in Byzantine style, which dates from the 5th century, had been gradually acquired. The church’s history will be briefly presented while its painter of murals and icons over the years, Mr. John Magafas, will tell about his work (see images in the video below) and Dr. John Hadjinicolaou, founder of the Montreal Centre for Greek Studies, will talk about the parish in the context of culture and Orthodox theology.

Place: 419 St. Roch Street at Durocher Street, Room SS18, William Hingston Complex, north of the Parc métro along Durocher. [3rd block east of the site of the church.] St. Roch is the 2nd street north of Jean Talon and the 2nd south of Jarry. Upon entering, take either the elevator to the basement (SS) or the stairs near the library.

Vous êtes invité à la soirée annuelle de la Société d'histoire de Parc-Extension avec une conférence portant sur l'histoire et le patrimoine du quartier. Les desserts, incluant le délice grec moustokouloura, seront servis avec choix de café, thé ou jus.
La conférence portera sur l'église anciennement située au 7700 ave de l’Épée, la Koimisis Tis Theotokou (Assomption de la Vierge) qui passa au feu ce dernier lundi de Pâques causant des vagues de tristesse et de détresse dans la communauté grecque. Suivant l'achat du bâtiment en 1968 (l'église fût construite par l'Église du Nazaréen), la congrégation avait acquise une splendide collection d'art religieux et décoratif du style Byzantin, qui date du 5e siècle. L'histoire de l'église sera présentée et le peintre responsable des murales et icônes, M John Magafas, parlera de ses oeuvres (présentes dans la vidéo ci-dessus). Dr John Hadjinicolaou, fondateur du Centre d'études grecques de Montréal, discutera de la paroisse dans le contexte de la culture et théologie Orthodoxe.
Lieu : Au 419 rue Saint-Roch (coin Durocher) dans la salle SS18 du centre William-Hingston, une rue au nord du métro Parc. La rue Saint-Roch est la 2e au nord de Jean-Talon et la 2e au sud de Jarry. Dans le centre, prenez soit l'ascenseur pour le sous-sol ou l'escalier à côté de l'entrée pour la bibliothèque.
