CONCERT REVIEW - Bhupinder Singh, tabla & Jagroop Singh, singer
This was a wonderful evening with two excellent, Montreal-based musicians who also play more "popular" music together. They performed two & and half hours of  many-versed "jugalbandi" songs, mostly in the Gujarati (?) language, illustrating love and loss, etc..  As one of a handful of non-Indian spectators, my friend and I were most impressed with their laid-back musicality, expressing a wide range of emotion with minimum movement, restrained dynamic range and occasional percussion frenzies. We didn't understand the words of the many verses of poetry, but that didn't matter. Afterwards, we learned that "jugalbandi" were known throughout the Indian continent in the 20's and 30's. A couple of writers from the Desi Times attended and planned to print an article this week and a few leaders of the India-Canada Association came as well. No wives or children however! The organizers had hoped more South Asian residents would attend.  We hope they will perform at Café l'Artère again as it is an ideal location to experience such artistry. (mm)
